Thread Count Vs. Fabric: What Really Matters for Luxurious Bedlinen?

Thread Count Vs. Fabric: What Really Matters for Luxurious Bedlinen?

by Lisa Levi April 09, 2025

Have you ever run your hands over a set of sheets and instantly felt the difference? Some are crisp and cool, others buttery soft, and some just feel average. What makes bedlinen truly luxurious? If you’ve heard that higher thread count = better quality, you’re not alone, but that’s only part of the story!

While thread count plays a role, the type of fabric, weave, and craftsmanship matter just as much, if not more! So, let’s break it all down and help you find the perfect sheets for your sleep style.

WHAT IS THREAD COUNT AND DOES IT REALLY MATTER?

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into a 10cm squared block of fabric, including both vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads. It’s often marketed as the ultimate measure of sheet quality, but here’s the truth, a higher thread count doesn’t always mean better sheets.

At a certain point, typically around 600, more threads can make fabric feel dense, heavy, and less breathable. This is why some high-thread-count sheets actually sleep hotter! Instead of just looking at the numbers, it’s helpful to consider fabric type and weave to find the best balance of softness, breathability, and durability.

THE REAL MVPS- BAMBOO AND COTTON

Not all fabrics are created equal, and when it comes to luxury bedlinen, Bamboo and Cotton each have their own superstar qualities. Let’s compare:

COTTON: CLASSIC, CRISP AND TIMELESS

  • Naturally breathable, keeping you cool and comfortable.

  • Gets softer with every wash for that cosy, lived-in feel.

  • Durable and long-lasting with a classic, some would call hotel-style finish.

Cotton is known for its fresh, crisp texture that only gets better over time. If you love that luxurious hotel-sheet feel, Cotton is an excellent choice.

TRY IT: Our Vintage Cotton Reversible Quilt Cover Set offers the perfect blend of softness, breathability, and effortless style, making it a timeless addition to any bedroom.

BAMBOO: SILKY-SMOOTH AND SUPER SUSTAINABLE

  • Naturally moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating.

  • Ultra-soft with a silky, luxurious feel.

  • Hypoallergenic and perfect for allergies or sensitive skin.

Bamboo sheets have a buttery-soft texture, almost like silk, making them an excellent choice for hot sleepers and those with allergies or sensitive skin. They regulate temperature beautifully, keeping you cool in Summer and warm in Winter.

TRY IT: Our Plant-Dyed Organic Bamboo Silk Collection is incredibly soft, breathable, and naturally dyed using plant-based colours, offering a luxurious and eco-friendly sleep experience.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: BAMBOO-COTTON BLEND

Of course we had to create this beautiful fabric. For those who can’t choose, why not have both? A Bamboo Cotton blend combines the silky softness and temperature-regulating benefits of Bamboo with the classic structure and breathability of Cotton. This blend creates a beautifully balanced fabric: lightweight, durable, and ultra-comfortable all year round.

TRY IT: Our Brooklyn Stripe Quilt Cover Set is the perfect fusion of Bamboo’s softness and Cotton’s crispness, offering a versatile, breathable, and effortlessly stylish bedlinen option.

BEYOND THREAD COUNT: LOOK FOR QUALITY CERTIFICATIONS

When comparing natural fabrics, a great indicator of quality to look out for is the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. This globally recognised textile standard ensures that no harmful chemicals or substances have been used in the entire production process.

It’s a step up from standard Organic Certification, which only covers the raw material (the Bamboo or Cotton fibres) but doesn’t certify the production process, colour dyeing, or additional materials like buttons and thread. Choosing OEKO-TEX-certified bedlinen means you’re investing in safer, cleaner, and more skin-friendly fabrics for your home.

At Pure Zone, this is important to us. We’re proud to create bedding that balances luxury, affordability, and sustainability. Our strong Australian family values are at the heart of everything we do and our products are designed by our family, with your family in mind.

TRY IT: You’ll find the OEKO-TEX-certification on most of our bedlinen so you can sleep soundly knowing your sheets are as pure as they are luxurious.

THE SWEET SPOT: THREAD COUNT FOR BAMBOO AND COTTON

BAMBOO: Our Bamboo collections range from 375-750 thread count. You don’t need to jump straight to the higher number with Bamboo. Bamboo fibres are naturally long and smooth, creating an ultra-soft feel even at a lower count.

COTTON: For high-quality Cotton sheets, 300-400 thread count is the ideal range, offering the best combination of softness, breathability, and durability. Anything higher can sometimes feel too heavy and less airy.

WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Both Bamboo and Cotton offer incredible comfort, it all comes down to personal preference:

Love silky softness with temperature control? Bamboo is your best bet!.
Prefer crisp, classic comfort? Cotton is the way to go.

No matter your choice, quality always comes first. At Pure Zone, we focus on premium natural fibres, sustainable sourcing, and expert craftsmanship, because luxury is about more than just thread count.

We believe a Pure Zone is a healthy, happy home. That’s why we strive to create quality, affordable textiles that help you build your perfect sleep sanctuary. With strong Australian family values at our core, every product is designed by our family, with your family in mind.
