Buyers Guide Pillows

Choosing the right pillow can mean the difference between taking on the morning like Superwoman or making an appointment with the Chiropractor! This helpful Buyers’ Guide will help you make the right choice to support your neck and breathing for a good sleep.

What materials are available?

The fibres (or stuffing) inside your pillow-of-choice and the fabric outer casing are the closest things to your face when you sleep, so give extra consideration to your lungs when choosing a pillow - especially if you are prone to allergies or snoring! The stuffing of your pillow also affects how firm or “squishy” it feels, and how it will hold its shape over time.

100% NATURAL BAMBOO FIBRES

Bamboo is one of the most hygienic and sustainable natural materials available.

Bamboo fibres are naturally temperature regulating and are light and soft, making pillows filled with natural Bamboo Fibres an excellent choice if you generally run hot.

This filling also has natural hypoallergenic, odour-neutralising and antibacterial qualities making it one of the healthiest fibres to sleep on if you are prone to skin sensitivities and allergies.

DUCK DOWN FEATHERS

Favoured for their “fluff factor” and 5-star hotel feelings, Duck Down also is a natural dust mites repellent, so is a great option for people with dust allergies.

The natural softness of Duck Down contours around the curves of your neck when you sleep, achieving a soft hug-like head support. As a natural material, they are also a great temperature regulator.

Some Duck Down Pillows might be known for giving less neck support than other options, Pure Zone Duck Down Pillows are made with 3-layers of feathers for extra neck support. An outer layer of the softest Duck Down encases a central layer of larger feathers. This unique design keeps the feel of the pillow soft on the outside, but with more robust head and neck support in the centre.

MEMORY FOAM

Known for that sinking feeling when you rest your head on a Memory Foam Pillow, the sturdy synthetic foam will mould around your head when you sleep, but return to its regular shape as soon as your head leaves the pillow.

This is the best choice if you suffer with neck or back pain or often wake up with pain around your pressure points, a Memory Foam Pillow will give you the firmest neck support.

Memory Foam can absorb and hold onto heat, so it’s also a great choice for colder climates as it will stay warm throughout the night.

MICROFIBRE

Microfibre is a synthetic material that is light and fluffy with superior hypoallergenic qualities.

A versatile material, they can be made ultra-light for a cooling summer pillow, or with a higher GSM and fluffy loft for a cosy alternative to Duck Down Feathers for allergy sufferers.
Microfibre pillows are also machine washable, so are a great low maintenance choice.

Our Cooling Pillow is filled with 100% Microfibre, and is designed with extra ventilation in the sides and a customised outer with airflow technology, making this the ultimate pillow for hot sleepers.

WHAT KIND OF SLEEPER ARE YOU?

Choose the right pillow for you based on your sleeping style. Who says your family all has to have the same pillows?

A WHOLE PILE-OF-PILLOWS PRINCESS.

If you like to stack-em high, and snuggle into a cloud of pillows, Duck Down Pillows are for you. They are lofty and fluffy like a cloud, but stacked up, they will contour, compress and mould gently around your sleeping position, providing support where you need it.

AVOID: Firm pillows that hold their shape when you lay on them. In this sleeping style, they will put unnecessary pressure on your neck.

STOMACH-SLEEPERS

Stomach sleepers naturally have to sleep with their head turned to one side, creating stress for your spine throughout the night. The medical advice is to try sleeping in a different position, but if you’re set in your ways, the right pillow will help greatly. Rather than soft or firm, the most important element to consider is height. If a pillow is too thick, your neck will arch upwards and invite tension into your neck and shoulders. Ideally choose a pillow less than 7cm high (our natural Bamboo Pillow is our lowest option with just 700gm filling).

TOP TIP: Adding an extra pillow underneath your pelvis in this position will help maintain a natural alignment of your spine and take stress away from your lower back muscles.

AVOID: Any thickly stuffed plush pillows that will strain your neck too much. Keep it thin, low, and double up with a pillow under your pelvis.

SIDE SLEEPERS

If you tend to sleep on your side and hug your pillow, you need a firmer higher loft pillow to support your head at the higher height created between your neck and shoulder.

Side sleepers are most compatible with Memory Foam Pillows, as the material will mould to the support level you need, but still with a firm structural support.

FLAT-OUT BACK SLEEPERS

Lucky you! This is recognised by health professionals as the safest position for sleeping in most cases, as it creates a neutral and relaxed alignment of your head, neck and spine. But as little as 8% of us are Back Sleepers. If you’re one of the lucky ones, most pillow options are fine - as long as you don’t overextend your neck too much. This means avoiding higher firm lofty pillows and sticking to middle-weight sizes.

SNORERS...

If you’re a snorer (or maybe you’re married to one), the medical advice on sleeping positions is to try sleeping on your side, or elevating your head an extra few centimetres to help open the airways. Both of these adjustments will be helped greatly with a firm and supportive Memory Foam Pillow. Give it a try!
