We all hear that “all-natural” is the trend - all natural food, all natural fabrics, even all-natural medicine is growing in popularity. And with good reasons. When it comes to your home, and more importantly your bedroom, these benefits start to really stand out.

You probably spend nearly one-third of your life in your bedroom, maybe more. It’s also the room where we are our most exposed to our environment. Unless you pull a Barney Stinson and sleep in a 3-piece suit, chances are you’re a little more casual at home.

You need your home to be a welcoming and healthy place for you to relax and recharge. Filling the space with natural materials will help you leverage these benefits where they matter most.

We could write a book on all the specific benefits of each type of natural material–like bamboo’s temperature control or granite’s durability and scratch resistance. But that would take you hours to read, so for now, let’s take a look at some of the key benefits shared by most natural materials.

  1. They are healthier for you.

This is many people’s main reason for buying all-natural products, and for good reason. Natural materials tend to use much fewer toxins in their production process because they don’t need to be fundamentally changed. They also tend to be more hypoallergenic, which can be a real life changer for anyone suffering from heightened allergies.

For example, in many countries, baby mattresses are required to be fire resistant. Most companies achieve this by adding toxic chemicals which the baby then sleeps pressed up against all night. A natural wool mattress could avoid this because it’s already naturally fire-resistant. No chemicals needed.

While the chemicals in most home products (like our baby’s mattress) won’t kill you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t toxic and unhealthy. They can be most harmful to your skin or allergies, but can also be causing small negative impacts on your health over the years. The honest answer is, we aren’t sure about many of them yet.

While this obviously depends on the specific material, natural products are often much more durable than their artificial counterparts.

These materials are forged in the chaotic environment of nature. They are designed to last and survive. Less synthetic processing means more solid pieces and fewer weak points that can wear down.

Also, since many natural materials derive their beauty from their slightly imperfect look and feel, they are more forgiving of dents, scratches and tears. These things give your home more character, rather than destroying the aesthetic.

It’s key to realise that these products tend to have a much longer life than their synthetic partner. So while they are often a little more costly up front, they will need to be replaced less frequently.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that using natural materials is better for the environment. Less processing means less waste, less electricity, and less chemical runoff. Especially when being traded for plastics like polyester fabric which require multiple toxic chemicals to manufacture.

You can also feel safer disposing of the products once they finally have worn down. Natural materials decompose better and cause much less harm to the environment. As a bonus, their longer life means you will not only be generating better waste but less of it too.

Numerous studies have shown that exposure to nature helps reduce stress and may improve cognitive performance. Some have even shown that simply having a view of nature can have positive impacts.

Now, you probably don’t want to move your bedroom outside. But you can still reap some of those benefits by moving more of nature into your bedroom. The best thing is to add living plants to your room, but it’s not your only option.

Switching to natural materials for your bedding, decorations, and furniture can help create a more calming and clean environment. Especially if those materials have a more natural appearance, like some fabrics or wood furniture.

Have you ever noticed how nature seems to have an effortless beauty? Rooms filled with natural products can start to borrow from that beauty by creating a space full of textures and colors–replacing the boring manufactured look that low-quality materials have brought us.
