Where Do Our New Organic Plant-Dyed Hues Come From?

by Lisa Levi October 02, 2024

At Pure Zone, we’ve always had a deep connection with nature and sustainability. Our newest Plant Dyed Organic Bamboo Silk collection, featuring four stunning, natural plant-dyed hues, showcases this dedication to eco-friendly craftsmanship. But where exactly do these beautiful colours come from? Let’s explore the plants behind these shades, celebrating their history and the artistry of plant dyeing.

A FUSION OF TIMELESS CRAFT AND MODERN SIMPLICITY

The art of plant dyeing dates back thousands of years, and at Pure Zone, we are proud to keep this tradition alive. The process involves careful preparation, from extracting pigments through boiling to treating fabrics with natural mordants to help the dyes adhere. This eco-friendly method not only produces beautiful, earthy tones but also ensures that our bedlinen remains gentle on your skin and kind to the planet.

The health benefits of our Organic Bamboo Bedlinens are multiplied in this brand new fabrication. Pure Silk is yarn-dyed with colours extracted from natural plants, then woven into Organic Bamboo Thread. Our plant-dyeing practices emphasise sustainability—using renewable resources and minimising water waste. Plus, the natural antibacterial properties of plant dyes offer additional benefits for your health and well-being. Naturally antimicrobial and dust mite inhibitant, these plant properties stay strong in the fabric even after 50 washes.

AZURE: THE DEEP BLUE OF INDIGO

Our serene Azure shade is derived from the Indigofera Tinctoria plant, famously used for centuries to create a rich blue. The indigo plant, known for its deep, striking hue, has been prized in many cultures, including ancient Egypt and India, where it was used to dye textiles and fabrics. Indigo dyeing is a meticulous process that involves extracting pigments through fermentation, resulting in this stunning shade of blue. The colour speaks to tradition while aligning with modern sustainable practices.

ROSE: THE WARM GLOW OF CHESTNUTS

For our delicate Rose hue, we look to the natural beauty of the Chestnut. The Castanea sativa (European Chestnut) and Castanea dentata (American Chestnut) have long been used in natural dyeing to produce warm, earthy tones. By utilising the tannins in chestnuts, we achieve a soft, muted pink that feels warm and inviting. This gentle hue perfectly captures the spirit of nature and brings a soothing touch to your bedroom.

NATURAL: EARTHY WARMTH FROM CHINESE GALLNUT

Our Natural shade comes from the Chinese Gallnut. These gallnuts, produced by an aphid that lives on oak trees, are rich in tannins, which make them ideal for creating natural dyes. The result is a beautiful cream colour, providing a neutral, versatile tone that exudes warmth. The Chinese Gallnut not only offers excellent colour fastness but also connects us to ancient dyeing techniques that have been passed down for generations.

BARK: SUBTLE ELEGANCE FROM POMEGRANATE PEEL

For a soft, refined Bark shade, we turn to the Pomegranate Peel. This natural source is rich in tannins, which help create a lovely grey tone. Pomegranates have been used for centuries in natural dyeing, and their pigments give fabrics a subtle elegance. The grey hue from the pomegranate peel is both versatile and timeless, adding a calm sophistication to any bedroom setting.
