The humble top sheet. Hero of hotel beds everywhere… or an outdated extra we secretly avoid? For some, it is a non-negotiable layer of comfort. For others, it is just extra fabric that ends up twisted at the end of the bed. Opinions are strong, cupboards are full, and the great bed-making debate is alive and well. At Pure Zone, we are here to help you weigh it up, because when it comes to comfort, sustainability, and creating a healthy, happy home, your bedding should work with you, not against you.

Before we dive into the debate, let’s define what a flat sheet actually is. Sometimes called a top sheet, it is the extra layer that sits between you and your quilt, coverlet or blanket. Unlike a fitted sheet, which is elasticated to hug tightly around the mattress and protect it, a flat sheet lies loose over the fitted sheet. Traditionally, it is tucked in neatly at the sides and folded back at the top for a polished finish.
Once considered a bedding essential in every household, today the flat sheet is more of a choice. Some love the added comfort and hygiene it brings, while others see it as an unnecessary extra step in their routine.

We know you probably came here hoping for a definitive answer in this great debate. The truth is, there isn’t one. The best choice depends on how you like to sleep, the climate you live in, and the kind of comfort you want in your bedroom. So let’s break it down!

A flat sheet adds a gentle, breathable layer that many find comforting and snug, creating a calm, cocoon-like sleep space.
Layering a flat sheet with a fitted sheet creates that polished, five-star hotel look and feel that makes your bed feel extra special.
A flat sheet acts as a buffer between you and your quilt cover, helping to keep it fresher for longer and reducing how often bulky pieces need to be washed.
In Summer, a flat sheet can be used on its own for lightweight coverage. In cooler months, it provides that extra layer of warmth without heaviness.

Some prefer a simplified bed with fewer layers, choosing comfort without the extras.
Skipping the flat sheet means one less layer to tuck in, fold, and wash, definitely a welcome simplicity for many households.
Fewer layers mean less laundry, less water, and aligns with a less-is-more approach.
With washable quilt covers, some feel the flat sheet has become optional rather than essential.
One topic that came up again and again is freshness. A fitted sheet protects your mattress, while a flat sheet adds another layer between you and your quilt, comforter, or blanket. This extra barrier can help keep those heavier pieces fresher for longer and reduce how often they need washing.
For those who prefer to sleep without a flat sheet, the focus is simply on caring for the quilt cover or blanket with more regular washes. Either way, the goal is the same: a bed that feels fresh, clean, and inviting.
This is where Pure Zone’s Organic Bamboo collection really shines. Naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, and resistant to dust mites, Bamboo bedlinen really helps support a healthier sleep environment. Its breathability and softness also make it beautifully comfortable, so you can rest easy knowing your bed is comfortable, fresh and sustainable.

This feels like the perfect time to talk about one of the most underrated duos in bedlinen; the flat sheet and coverlet. As coverlets make a stylish comeback, the flat sheet is the perfect partner.

A flat sheet beneath a coverlet adds comfort and breathability, ideal for transitional weather.
In Spring and Summer, this pairing often replaces the need for a quilt, giving you just the right balance of lightness and warmth.
Together, they create a layered, elegant look with texture and depth.
Our coverlets are already loved by our customers for their timeless style and year-round versatility, we’re excited to be launching a new Coverlet Collection for Spring. It is the perfect time to rediscover the flat sheet as a functional and beautiful addition to your bed.

At Pure Zone, we believe bedding should fit your lifestyle, not the other way around. That’s why our sheet ranges are designed with choice and flexibility in mind. We not only cater for different mattress depths, but also for those who love a flat sheet and those who prefer to skip it.
For the flat sheet minimalists, we’ve created fitted sheet and pillowcase sets in both Cotton and Bamboo that don’t include one, so nothing sits unused in the cupboard.

By offering this flexibility, we make sure your bedding works for you: saving money, avoiding over production, and keeping your home both comfortable and sustainable.
We couldn’t resist asking some of our team members around the office, and as expected, the opinions are split:
Sharon - Yes. Keeps you warm, if I don't use it I get cold. I always drape it, no tucking at my place.
Gem - No I don't use it at home, but when I holiday in Queensland I do love using just the flat sheet. It's light enough to give me cover because I have to have something over me at night. Using a flat sheet reminds me of staying at my Nans because the bedroom felt like a very formal set up. I have to admit that sometimes over Summer I do wish I used the flat sheet, maybe this Summer I will try?
Lisa - It's a no for me day to day. But I do enjoy using a Flat Sheet when I am at a hotel as it feels very luxurious.
Michelle - I don't use a Flat Sheet on my own bed but my daughter loves it - she says it makes her feel like she's in a hotel.
Sarah - Yes I always use a Flat Sheet but not as a top sheet, I use it over my fitted sheet as an extra layer. I think this is very common in my Chinese culture.
Liz - No I don't use it. I certainly did when I was younger but that was when we used top sheets and blankets as layers. Since we moved to a quilt instead of a blanket, I don't use one anymore.
Kiran - Yes I always use a flat sheet but I use it on top of the fitted sheet, so I sleep on top of it. Then the quilt on top of me. If I get cold, I add another Quilt or Blanket as an extra layer.
Steve - Not usually. I would only use Flat Sheets in really hot weather when I wouldn't use a quilt.
